    • DETAILS
      • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
      • Preparation method: Grilling
    • HIGHLIGHTS
      • Using only a simple spice rub and your bbq rotisserie, you can transform an economical cut of beef into a tender sirloin tip roast beef dinner.
      • Take care not to overcook the roast, and be sure to slice it thinly for the most tender result.
      • This grilled roast is perfect for everything from backyard entertaining to special occasions.

With the ever-rising cost of beef, a roast beef dinner feels extra special these days. To keep the cost down without sacrificing flavor, I lean towards grilling sirloin tip roasts. They're a lean cut of meat, and are quite economical. They do require a little extra care and attention to ensure you get a tender, juicy piece of meat, but the process is mostly hands-off. The key is to not overcook the beef, let it rest, and thinly slice it against the grain. Read on to find out how.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

A sheet pan with a raw sirloin tip roast and a bowl of bbq rub.
    • Sirloin tip roast--This is a lean cut of beef from the hind leg of a cow. If available to you, tri-tip or top sirloin would also be excellent cuts for this preparation and could easily be substituted here. Look for a roast with an even shape so that it will cook evenly throughout.
    • BBQ rub--Use your favorite store-bought or homemade bbq rub for this roast. A combination of salt, pepper, and granulated garlic is classic for beef, and you can't go wrong with it, but feel free to use your own favorite blend of spices.

How to Make Rotisserie Grilled Roast Beef

A beef roast covered in BBQ rub.

    1. Rub the roast all over with the seasoning blend.

A beef roast on a grill rotisserie.

    2. Cook on a rotisserie on the grill at about 400°F (200°C), until the internal temperature of the meat reaches 135°F (54°C).

    FAQs

Can I make this without a rotisserie?

Yes, definitely. Cook the meat over low direct heat, keeping the grill around 400°F (200°C), and turn it 90 degrees every 15 minutes until it reaches the desired internal temperature. The cook time will be similar to cooking it on a rotisserie.

What doneness should I cook my roast to?

I recommend serving the beef medium-rare, or rare, if you prefer. This will keep it juicy and moist, while overcooking may result in tough, dry meat. Remove it from the grill when the internal temperature is 130°F (54°C) for medium-rare, or 120°F (49°C) for rare.

    Serving Suggestions

This stunning grilled roast is worthy of a special occasion, so be sure to serve it with some great side dishes. I recommend grilled twice-baked potatoes and seared asparagus for a complete meal.

    Storage

Leftover beef can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

    Tips and Troubleshooting

    • Let your meat rest for at least 10 minutes after cooking before you slice. This will help the juices to redistribute throughout the roast, ensuring juicy, tender slices.
    • This recipe is suitable for gluten-free and dairy-free diets.
