    Cinnamon Roll French Toast

    Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This cinnamon roll French toast combines the rich, eggy goodness of traditional French toast with sweet cinnamon buns to create an unforgettable breakfast. With minimal ingredients and a short cooking time, it's easy enough to make at camp but special enough to serve for a holiday breakfast at home.

What's better than French toast for breakfast? French toast made with cinnamon rolls, of course! The sweetly spiced buns soak up a rich cinnamon-spiced custard and a quick trip across your griddle delivers crispy-edged, tender slices of breakfast perfection. Make them at home or at camp for a special occasion treat.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • It can be prepared on your outdoor griddle (Blackstone) or your cast iron skillet, making it perfect for cooking at home or at camp.
    • You can scale it to feed as many or as few as you need.
    • It's a fantastic way to use up extra cinnamon buns.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Ingredients for cinnamon roll French toast--eggs, cinnamon rolls, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar, butter, and milk.
    • Cinnamon rolls--You can use your favorite homemade cinnamon rolls, or store-bought. You need to slice them in half horizontally before soaking and cooking so that they can fully soak up the custard.
    • Milk--Any type of milk will work, including non-dairy. The higher the fat content, the richer your cinnamon bun French toast will be, however, I don't recommend using anything richer than half and half. Whipping cream tends to make it too fatty.
    • Vanilla--Only the real stuff, please!

    FAQs

Can I make it in my cast iron skillet?

Sure. Follow the directions, using your cast iron skillet over your stovetop or camp stove. Depending on the size of your skillet, you may need to cook in batches. If cooking in batches, divide the butter, adding a little extra with each batch.

What should I serve with this?

Serve this sweet breakfast treat with a savory side, like breakfast sausages or griddle bacon, and some fresh berries on the side.

    Tips and Troubleshooting

    • Very large cinnamon rolls (more than 3 inches tall) may take longer to cook.
    • These are best enjoyed as soon as they are made. I don't recommend storing or reheating them.

    • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • Pinch salt
    • 2 cinnamon rolls sliced in half horizontally

    Instructions

    • Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt together in a measuring jug.

    • Heat your griddle to medium. Add the butter and let it melt.
    • Remove each piece of roll from the custard, letting any excess drip back into the dish and place it on the griddle. Cook, flipping once, until golden and crispy on the outside, about 4 minutes per side.
    • Dust with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve with maple syrup, if using.
