Why This Recipe is Great for Camping
- It's an easy s'more-inspired dessert that doesn't require any cooler space.
- You can make as few or as many as you need at a time.
- Kids love them!
Ingredients and Substitutions
- Waffle cones--I highly recommend using waffle cones instead of regular ice cream cones for this recipe. Their unique shape allows them to be filled and covered with foil without everything sticking to the foil.
- Marshmallows--I use a combination of jumbo and mini marshmallows. The jumbo size is perfect for "plugging" the bottom of the cone, while the mini ones are ideal to mix into the filling. If you only have mini marshmallows, use 4 or 5 to fill the bottom.
- Teddy Grahams--I like golden Teddy Grahams here for their sweet graham flavor, but any small sweet crunchy cookie will work.
- Chocolate chips and Rolo pieces--These add the chocolate component of classic s'mores to this campfire cones recipe, but feel free to get creative and use your favorite chocolate candies here.
How to Make Waffle Cone S'mores
- Place a jumbo marshmallow (or a handful of small marshmallows into the bottom of each cone.
- Fill the remaining cone with chocolate chips, Rolo pieces, mini marshmallows, and Teddy Grahams.
- Wrap each cone in foil.
- Cook over hot coals or very low flame until the filling is soft and the chocolate is mostly melted.
FAQs
Yes. If you can set up your grill for two-zone cooking, use that and put the cones on the cooler side of the grill. If not, set them over the lowest possible flame for cooking.
You can fill and wrap your cones up to 24 hours in advance. Marshmallows go stale pretty quickly after that.
The sky's the limit. Toss in some fresh fruit, like diced strawberries or sliced bananas. Add some crunchy colorful candies, like Reese's pieces or M&M's. Try it with caramel chips instead of chocolate.
Tips and Troubleshooting
- Use heavy duty aluminum foil for wrapping your cones, or wrap with a double layer of foil.
- Cook over hot coals or very low flame. If you cook the campfire cones over strong flames, they will burn.
- To check for doneness, carefully peel back the foil. The marshmallows and chocolate should be very soft and almost melted. If it's not done, cover and put it back on the grate for a few extra minutes. The cooking time will be dependent on the heat of your fire and the distance your grate is from the heat.
